ISOMEMBRANE® : PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT FOR HEAT RATE RECOVERY Power Plant Sealing of Dead Air-Space & Expansion Joint Repair. YOUR "AIR IN-LEAKAGE" SOLUTION!!A PROVEN FLEXIBLE HIGH TEMPERATURE SOLUTION
PENTHOUSE AND OTHER DEAD AIR SPACE APPLICATIONS: Power plant designers and operators are familiar with the problem of sealing the roof of pulverized fuel-fired boilers against flyash intrusion into the so called dead air space on top of the boiler. During heating up, cooling down and normal operation, the many steam and water tubes collecting here move in opposing directions due to thermal expansion. A durable metallic seal has shown difficult to provide, as steel is very inelastic. Due to the differences in pressure, fluegas carrying flyash will enter through the leaks into dead air space from the combustion chamber. The flyash will settle in the dead air space and the fluegas will continue either to the second draft of the boiler or further out into the boilerhouse.
EXPANSION JOINTS AND CRACKED OUTER CASINGS: Other difficulties faced in plants are cracking and tears in expansion joints and outer casings. These areas continue to be huge sources of air in-leakage and flyash collection. ISOMEMBRANE® allows for thermal expansion while still providing the seal required for efficient operation. As a bonus; ISOMEMBRANE® installed on the gas side of the expansion joint can provide protection from flyash collecting in the pleats/folds. Flyash collecting in these pleats/folds can restrict the expansion joint's ability to function as designed (bind up the joint). On external applications; installation can sometimes be done with the unit on line providing immediate impovements and quick payback.
These leakage conditions can cause several consequences: Potential Safety Risks Loss of Energy and Effeciency Difficulty and Cost In Removal For Maintenance Additional Forced Or Scheduled Outage Downtime Risk Of Boiler Roof Collapse Due To Additional Weight
HIDDEN COSTS OF AIR IN-LEAKAGE: Some other hidden costs of air in-leakage include: Poor low NOx burner performance, high carbon in flyash or loss on ignition, overloaded ID fan from leakage which limits fan capacity, secondary combustion at the superheater with consequent tube metal overheating and slagging, desuperheating spray water flow changes, fan horsepower loss, eletrostatic precipitatior performance deterioration, steam temperatures different form design, flyash accumulation in the penthouse or header enclosures interfering with outage repairs and requiring expensive and time consuming removal, and safety as related to header enclosures and penthouses that overhang areas below which personnel may be working.
Solving the Problem:
Luse Thermal Technologies, LLC., ISOMEMBRANE® technology was developed to deal with these problems. ISOMEMBRANE® is a flexible, elastic multi-plane ashtight sealing system, composed of refractory and special designed insulation materials. ISOMEMBRANE® is considered the most advanced and efficient way to seal dead air spaces. It can be installed in existing boilers or new construction including penthouses, vestibules, lower and upper dead air spaces, nose arche areas, air heaters and associated expansion joints, precipitators, boiler casings, buck stays, Ducts and the list goes on even for high temperature applications.
ISOMEMBRANE® has proven its effectiveness for more than two decades in Europe, and more than 16 years in North America in powerplants ranging in capacity from 9Mw to 2,200Mw. Our experience shows a lifetime of 8 to 12 years in an undisturbed environment. Check out the Isomembrane web page with MSDS sheets, articals etc.
